Kinetic Kids: Sports and Recreation for All Abilities
Kinetic Kids was founded in 2001 by San Antonio pediatric physical therapists Tracey Fontenot and Kacey Wernli. As Ms. Fontenot and Ms. Wernli worked as physical therapists for children with physical disabilities, they discovered an absence of sports and recreational programs for children with special needs in San Antonio.
There were no community programs that would allow children with physical disabilities but normal intelligence to participate in activities similar to the children’s peers. Seeing a gap in services for these children, Tracey & Kacey developed a solution, mobilized community volunteers, and started Kinetic Kids.
The first program in 2001 was a t-ball league comprised of 12 children. Since then, parents, participants , physicians, and physical therapists have contributed to the success of Kinetic Kids by identifying needs and helping to form, develop, and run new classes. Kinetic Kids has expanded to serve children with cognitive disabilities as well, and this year will serve more than 1,200 children with special needs through 80+ programs and classes.
What is Kinetic Kids?
Kinetic Kids is a San Antonio nonprofit organization that provides sports,
recreation, and educational programs for children with disabilities who
may otherwise be excluded. It serves children and adolescents with
special needs like cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Down syndrome, autism,
brain tumors, childhood cancers, and other neurological disorders.
Success! As a result of participating in Kinetic Kids programs:
• 92% of children with special needs learned and mastered a new skill.
• 88% of children with special needs demonstrated an increase in activity level.
• 81% of children with special needs showed an increase in self-esteem.
What Do Parents Say About Kinetic Kids
“What has Kinetic Kids done for our child and for our family? It gives our child a place to belong, a way to
participate, a way to feel part of the group. It gives our daughter the opportunity to put her disability aside for a
bit and dance, tumble, cheer and laugh. It gives her the chance to be on a stage and perform. It gives her a
chance to be on the inside. It gives her family the chance to celebrate her abilities. For a parent of a child with a
disability, there is no greater gift.” –Peggy Neal

Kacey and Tracey had a vision to improve the lives of children with special needs by providing an avenue where children who once were left behind could find a way to be involved, thrive and be a part of community. They acted on their vision by sharing with others who began to share in the dream that children with all kinds of abilities can be athletes, can have friends, can feel good about themselves. These two women are positively inspiring!

Kacey and Tracey are two of the most loving young women. They saw a need, took it a step further and are changing lives of those who may not ever have had the opportunity to believe in themselves. They believe in every Kinetic Kid and have in turn seen every Kinetic Kid believe in themselves. Blessings on the two of you Kacey and Tracey!!!

This is truly an organization like no other. Before these incredible women's vision of Kinetic Kids, there was very little sports programs that these precious children with special needs could participate in. They have contributed not only to their physical health, but their social and emotional health as well!

You are truly "Angel" to these kids, I have seen their faces at the end of bike rides and that tells it all. It is not only an acomplishment for the childred but also for the parents. Thanks Kacey and Tracy for your devotion. Ursula

I have been fortunate enough to witness this organization progress from it's original set up and grow to where it is now. I can't tell you the amount of effort, time, and energy both Kacey and Tracey have put forth towards making Kinetic Kids what it is today!! And don't forget their sacrifices as they both had to have the courage to forgo their full-time physical therapy positions in order to be able to give the time required to grow KK. I am truly proud of both of them and I feel that they have blessed so many lives over the past 8 years!!

I have watched Kacey and Tracey cheering "their kids" on the t-ball field, reaching for the gymnast, supporting the dancer, lifting the bike rider, encouraging the speaker, and all the while stretching themselves personnally to have to ask for money, to coordinate fundraisers and to shake strangers' hands to constantly work to offer more opportunities for their kids. Their passion and faith in our community is boundless, a beautiful portrait of selflessness, all for their kinetic kids. Thank you, Kacey and Tracey!

Kacey and Tracey have brought SMILES to children who were told NO to sports and outdoor activities for way to long. Because of them children with Special needs like our daughter know the Joy of being a team player, dancing, camping, fishing and the list goes on.The Vision that Kacey and Tracey had while working with these Special children and listening to the parents is AMAZING. Our family will alway's be GREATFUL for the opportunities they have given our daughter and all Special needs children. Thank You Kacey and Tracey!

Kinetic Kids is a one of a kind non-profit organization that I have seen first hand change the lives of many children with special needs in our community. Kacey and Tracey are dedicated to make a difference and improve the lives of these children. They have inspired multiple health care professionals in our community and are extremely active and supportive of various organizations. Without Kinetic Kids, I don't know where I would be. Thank you Kacey and Tracey!

A truly awesome accomplishment to go from a start-up organization to what it is today...mainly because of Kacey and Tracey's efforts! Many blessings have come from their efforts...and I am sure new blessings will impact the lives of many other families in the future! Great Job!

Tracey and Kacey are my heroes for starting this most worthwhile organization! As a parent of a Kinetic Kid participant, it overjoys me to see the sheer happiness in my daughter's face when she takes part in her Cheerleading, Swimming and T-Ball programs. She takes such pride in her performances in an arena where she would otherwise not be accepted. Thank you Tracey and Kacey for making her feel "normal" and proud and, most of all, elated that she fits in!!!

What a great accomplishment on what has grown to be an amazing program. My daughter who is a Pediatric OT in Columbia, SC created a successful soccer program for special needs children last year and Kinetic Kids was a great inspiration to her success. She has since moved to VA and hopes to continue her efforts there this spring. May KK continue to inspire more programs in more communities across the U.S. I realize what dedication, sacrifices, time and effort are required to organize the wide range of programs KK now provides. The wide smiles and sense of pride they have provided these children is something you have to see in person to fully appreciate. JOB WELL DONE!

These are wonderful young woman, both Kacey and Tracey, with great professional skills and hearts full of care and the intent to help every child and teen develop their full potential. Every event I have attended I am touched with what each child and/or teen shares as to the impact Kinetic Kids has had on their lives. GREAT CARE, INTEREST AND PROFESSIONAL INSTRUCTIONS AND GUIDANCE.
